Ontario residents are encouraged to get out and enjoy our multi-use trails and provincial parks for hiking, snowmobiling, ATVing, snowshoeing, etc. People are mostly unaware that these same trails are also used for trapping. There are no regulations about how close to a public trail, roadway or private property a trap can be set, and no requirement to notify the public that they are there. As a matter of public safety, these uses are not compatible. Too many dogs are killed each year due to careless and outdated trapping methods. The petition at change.org/notrapsontrails has more than 82,000 signatures from people, mostly in Ontario, demanding change. To prevent more deaths on Ontario trails and improve the safety of everyone sharing our outdoor spaces, we urge Minister Kathryn McGarry and the MNRF to improve trapping practices and regulations. This includes establishing a minimum setback from public spaces and marking trails that run close to traplines with warning signs. As our representative, will you help us keep our pets and children safe? Please write or call Minister Kathryn McGarry and let her know that you think it’s time for the rules about trapping to be updated. Thank you.
